At The Officiant Office of New Orleans, we make no pretense of being wedding planners. There are plenty of wedding websites to investigate and many excellent local wedding-planning professionals to call on. If you need feedback, please ask.
We do know a thing or two about great public locations for couples who don’t want to commit to more formal wedding venues.
Here are some fun ideas:
Jackson Square, French Quarter
If you want to be wed in the quintessential New Orleans location, Jackson Square is the best bet. For a fee, you and your loved ones can enjoy a ceremony with St. Louis Cathedral and the manicured gardens as a backdrop. For details, check out the city’s rules and regulations.
If you don’t mind the crowds, a ceremony location in front of one of the gates to Jackson Square is an option that does not involve a fee or permit.
Pirates Alley and Pere Antoine Alley, French Quarter
Running along the side of St. Louis Cathedral with the church yard on one side and historic buildings on the other, these two cobblestone alleys are charming spots to hold a ceremony. Less hectic than the nearby Jackson Square, they offer a quiet alternative in the middle of the French Quarter.
At no cost, you and a few family members and friends can gather and have a simple ceremony in the heart of the city.
Audubon Park, Uptown
Audubon Park is one of the most beautiful locations in New Orleans. Choose among several romantic spots to hold your ceremony. From the majestic St. Charles Street Entrance to the lovely Cecile’s Crepe Myrtle Grove, the Fredric Law Olmstead-designed park delights and surprises. Shelters with bathrooms can be reserved. Details can be found on the park’s website.
City Park, Mid City
With over 1,300 acres to choose from, City Park offers plenty of locations for a simple wedding ceremony. It is wise to pick out a couple of spots that you might like since locations are on a first come, first serve basis. More elaborate celebrations require reservations. For more information, check out the City Park website.
For a true New Orleans experience, don’t forget to consider a Second Line. A jazz parade through the city streets is a fun way to bring your friends to your reception. A good description of what’s needed to obtain a permit and the other details is provided by the New Orleans Convention and Visitors Bureau website.
